Fissure sealant
What is a fissure sealant?
The goal of a sealant is to avoid dental decay in molars and protect them accordingly with a special treatment
The grooves in small and premolars make them hard to clean, and thus they decay easily.
Fissure sealants completely seal off these grooves, preventing any food particles or bacteria from getting in.
When is fissure sealant recommended?
Fissure sealant application is recommended after the first molars begin to break through the gums, at about 6 years of age, and it is best to do it within 6 months. The treatment requires the child’s cooperation; there is no drilling involved and we simply treat the tooth’s surface with the materials.
Fissure sealant can remain intact for years, but regular inspection is necessary to make sure that the seal is not damaged. From time to time it does need to be filled or replaced if needed.
